YOU DON’T GET IN LIFE WHAT YOU WANT…YOU GET IN LIFE WHAT YOU ARE
I wasn’t born in the best of circumstances. My parents had me their freshman year at Indiana University, and while it wasn’t the most ideal situation, they both managed to complete their degrees and go on to have fruitful careers in their respective fields. My mom raised me singly until she later married, and being an entrepreneurial thinker herself, the impact that she had on my life, in addition to the values instilled, were formidable in my development as an entrepreneur. Thank you, Mom 🙂
I was a mischievous kid..Couldn’t really pay attention to things that didn’t interest me, acted out in primary school, and whored attention much to the dismay of my teachers.. The only thing that really captivated my attention was my imagination, particularly daydreaming about building and flying airplanes, and going to space. Things every kid dreams about, right? Except, I really thought that it was possible. It wasn’t far fetched for me. After seeing the movie, ‘Magic of Flight’ at age 7, my world was completely rocked. Suddenly, I had an obsession. A passion for something that seemed a bit out of reach for an individual my age at the time. Thanks to those values that my precious mother reinforced, I was blessed to have the opportunity to experience my dream in ways that most kids could only, well, dream of. Even tried to start an airline at age 11. It was called Centurion Airways, a Christian airline complete with Bibles in the setback pockets and all! What an imagination…
As a teenager, I went to live with my dad, who at the time had over 7 kids! What a culture shock…Oftentimes, I felt like the awkward child/black sheep, but this further compelled me to pursue my dream of flight by whatever means necessary. Fortunately, I was able to wash my way through flight school and earned a coveted pilot certificate while still in high school. Unsure of how to pay for college, despite outstanding performance in high school, the military seemed like the common sense route (Dad’s a retired Army officer). Joined the Marine Corps and ended up with a scholarship to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, the Harvard of Aviation. Yet, the entrepreneurial calling on my life ate away at my being until it was unbearable…This is where the real adventure began.
PT. 2’s on its way!
